Our Design Principles.
Sitting in a pub in Sheffield in 2010, we created a simple set of design principles & a plan to disrupt the design industry. Our ambition was to design & manufacture modern, design led commercial products with a focus on material, craftsmanship & process. These design principles help us to maintain focus on what really matters.
1. Keep it simple, do it well.
A good friend once told us this & it stuck. Don’t overcomplicate things for the sake of it & make sure every detail is perfect. Take pride in the small things & do everything in your power to fully understand & master the skills needed for the material & the relevant process.
2. Make everyday products better.
You don’t have to reinvent the wheel but you can integrate intelligent refinements to make it better. Our role is to build upon thousands of years of knowledge & experimentation & make intelligent changes that can make a product look, feel & function that little bit better.
3. Material, Craft, Process.
Know your materials & understand how they can be manipulated for the best outcome. Research & obsess over craft & process to & look to the past, present & future for reference. Read, experiment & play continuously to help us create products that people will want to put in their homes, today, tomorrow & in 100 years time.
4. It’s all in the design detailing.
Obsess over every last detail in your own & others’ work. Continuously explore, sketch, test & refine to ensure that every detail is fully resolved, works well & is the best it can be.
5. Collaborate.
Celebrate the wealth of talent & knowledge around & support the local & British design scene. Work alongside craftsmen & include them in the process to produce more meaningful products with integrity.
6. Do Good Things.
In every way possible. Be better, be kind, learn, teach, listen, talk. Have a positive impact, stand up for your beliefs & make a difference.
7. Craft & Graft.
Learn new skills & make things with your hands. Put in the hours & work hard.
8. Measure Twice, Cut Once.
The first rule of any workshop. Enough said.
9. Bravery & Punk Spirit.
Don’t be afraid to be different. Celebrate these differences as it is these small characteristics that set us apart.
10. Inspiration From Everywhere.
Look to the past, present & future for inspiration. Always carry a notepad in your pocket as it is impossible to tell when inspiration may strike. Look to the arts, to music, to modern culture. Travel lots, learn & experience different cultures.
11. 15 Minutes More.
Small habits can make big changes. Invest time in yourself & do the things you love. Work harder & spend 15 minutes extra every day on something you are passionate about. It takes around 10,000 hours to become a master of something & there’s no time like the present.
12. Psalt Is For Life.
Start a gang… Psalt is more than a job, more than a business, more than brand. Psalt is a platform to make a difference by doing what we love.
